Migration from WordPress to HubSpot Redirects Thousands of Pages Without Losing Search Authority
A handful of recent acquisitions by global financial services franchise StoneX elicited a large-scale content migration via HubSpot to retain traffic volume without disrupting operations.
StoneX Success Metrics
Background
StoneX is an institutional-grade financial services franchise that provides global market access, clearing and execution, trading platforms and more to clients worldwide. After being acquired by StoneX, long-time SmartBug client Daniels Trading (a DBA of Global Asset Advisors) required a redesign and redirect of its website pages to align with the new company’s branding.
The Problem
Major Acquisition Warrants Simultaneous Sunsetting and Synchronizing
StoneX’s acquisition of Global Asset Advisors, a well-known futures broker, necessitated a fresh look that aligned with the primary StoneX identity, which meant sunsetting several brands by redirecting and archiving numerous pages on the current websites. Many existing pages demonstrated a considerably high traffic volume and notable search engine authority. One significant challenge would be migrating this content without negatively impacting traffic or search ranking.
Typically in such a case, a company’s marketing agency would simply take the existing website and redesign it with updated StoneX branding. However, the SmartBug team strongly recommended against this strategy, understanding that performing redirects may be more risky but could sustain website performance if executed properly. This redirect solution required high-level collaboration between both teams to develop a detailed plan of action—in this case, the strategic preparation was equally as critical as the project execution.
Working with a limited budget, SmartBug made the executive decision to stretch the timeline slightly to prioritize steady, meaningful progress. The plan would involve conducting a comprehensive SEO audit, then systematically categorizing content and creating topic clusters to ensure every piece of content had a home post-migration. The StoneX team took initiative as well, quickly learning the ins and outs of HubSpot so they could assist with approving, migrating, and repurposing content.
HubSpot was a clear solution for us ... and it was very clear that SmartBug would be our partner in forming [the] plan and figuring out what we need to do to minimize any negative impact.
The Solution
Executing a Large-Scale Content Migration from WordPress to HubSpot
- Full Content Migration via HubSpot
- Website Design and Development
- Webpage Redesign
- SEO Audit
- WordPress Integration
- Creation of Custom HubSpot Templates
- Content Strategy
- Resubmission of Sitemap to Google Search Console
After a full SEO audit of their content, the StoneX team joined forces with SmartBug to categorize thousands of pages, redirecting all valuable content to the new domain, archiving outdated material, and repurposing high-performing pages as necessary. This venture would require careful orchestration, exact sequencing, and proper timing to ensure a smooth and seamless migration.
“The initial goal was to define the universe of content that was actually adding value for us,” notes Adam Nicholson, Executive Director, Business Development Strategy at StoneX. “And SmartBug was instrumental in that process. ... [They] fundamentally understood the SEO value of the traffic that we were generating from that content and how important it was to transfer that value to whatever this new location was going to be.”
The in-depth training provided by SmartBug, paired with our years of experience with HubSpot tools, enabled us to fully leverage HubSpot’s capabilities, including manual reformatting, custom template creation, and advanced analytics. After struggling with a previous platform integration for more than 18 months, the StoneX team was grateful for SmartBug’s depth of knowledge from a technical standpoint.
The Results
Defying the Odds: Increasing Traffic Volume by 7 Percent Despite an Average 20 Percent Drop
In close collaboration with StoneX, our team successfully migrated or intentionally archived every single page from the old domain, even going so far as to redesign and redirect the client’s highest-performing page, the Futures Calculator. This was a huge lift, but together the teams took an existing website with lots of authority and redirected it to one with no domain authority—and saw an immediate increase in both qualified traffic and generated leads as a result.
I anticipated a significant drop in organic traffic for a while, but our main goal was to preserve as much of it as possible," noted Nicholson. "We not only achieved that but exceeded my expectations. Some pages maintained their traffic seamlessly and even saw an increase after the move.
