Background

SmartBugs from all over the world converged in Vancouver, BC, in May of 2024 for the 10th annual SmartBugaPalooza to celebrate our culture and success in three days of fun and team building.

But it’s not like a regular retreat ... it’s a cool retreat. As an event composed of discussions and activities that supported our growth and strengths, the team wanted to create a cohesive and fun theme to match.

The result? A superhero vibe that celebrates the idea that “everyone has a superpower.” Our design and copy teams created themed extras for 200+ attendees to enjoy, like t-shirts, stickers, name tags, animated videos, presentation templates, and more.

Super SmartBug T-Shirts

SmartBug is pretty darn super, and each ‘Bug brings their own powers to the work we do for clients. So we wanted to reflect this in the 2024 SmartBugaPalooza t-shirt. The design riffs on comic book art—from the hand-drawn lettering to the corner box dialogue—are complemented by superhero characters and the Vancouver skyline. The screen-printed tee uses SmartBug colors, with halftone dots for shading to elevate the comic vibe.

Always-On Animated Video

SmartBugaPalooza is meant to be both educational and fun. So we created a custom animation that energized the illustrations and played it on conference room screens between presenters. Having this extra visual cue gave the retreat a sense of branding at all times, even as it provided a digital decoration.

Name Tags For All

It’s easy to lose track of people—especially when you’re a remote company and haven’t all met each other. So we created name tags for each person integrating the superhero theme. Each was printed with CMYK colors and double-sided with information imported from a master team CSV file, with a few variations depending on department and whether the person signed up as a “Palooza Expert” helper.

Custom Presentation Template

SmartBugaPalooza is filled with conversations about both marketing and the agency, and we knew it needed to have a familiar—and fun—look. So the team created a custom slide deck based on our standard template, but with 28 unique slide layouts and a superhero twist. Each presentation got a little extra “pop” from the integrated halftone pattern, action lines, speech bubbles, and action callout shapes—while remaining aligned with SmartBug’s brand and the conference.

Stick-Everywhere Stickers

Stickers aren’t just for kids—so we made them for our kids at heart to stick on their name tags, notebooks, and each other. Each attendee received a kiss-cut sheet of CMYK printed stickers, designed to incorporate a combination of SmartBug and SmartBugaPalooza 24 branding and our superhero theme.
